In seguito al grande successo del 37° album in studio Roll With the Punches (entrato al No 4 in classifica in UK a settembre), Van Morrison ha già pronto il 38°! “Versatile” è la prova vivente del fatto che Van Morrison ha qualcosa di diverso rispetto a tutti gli altri artisti. Uno dei pochi che può essere raccontato come una “leggenda vivente” che ha deciso di lavorare con un ritmo impensabile anche per artisti che hanno un terzo dei suoi anni.
In Roll With The Punches rivisitava dei classici del rhythm and blues che lo avevano accompagnato per tutta la vita. In questo caso Van ha rispolverato i suoi archivi di musica jazz del ventesimo secolo e li ha fatti rivivere a modo suo.
Van Morrison interpreta ogni canzone in modo sorprendentemente unico.
E la sorpresa è ancora più grande pensando che questi sono brani resi famosi da nomi di grande prestigio come Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, The Righteous Brothers, Tony Bennett e Nat King Cole.
In Versatile ci sono anche 6 nuovi inediti tra cui Broken Record – un late-night swing senza tempo. Van racconta: “registrare canzoni di questa grandezza mi ha obbligato ad allenare e forzare la mia voce come facevo un tempo così come a tornare alla musica che mi ha ispirato maggiormente all’inizio: il jazz”. Versatile è gioia dall’inizio alla fine e ci dimostra come Van Morrison a 72 anni sia inarrestabile.
